Microplastics threat from proposed artificial pitch on West Hendon Playing Fields

Cool Oak is deeply concerned about Barnet Council’s proposal to install a floodlit 3G football pitch filled with rubber crumb microplastic in the middle of West Hendon Playing Fields, close to the Brent Reservoir (Welsh Harp) SSSI and an important habitat for protected species.

We believe this proposal raises serious environmental concerns and could have long-term impacts on one of the Welsh Harp’s most valuable wildlife areas.

This isn’t about being against sport. It’s about ensuring the right facilities are built in the right places.

Important questions remain about:

- disturbance to wildlife and displacement of listed breeding birds

- the intention to feed runoff carrying microplastics into the SSSI reservoir

- the daily top-up of rubber crumb to the pitch

- the loss of a tranquil green space enjoyed by everyone for the benefit of a few

- the long-term implications of locating this type of development beside such a sensitive ecological site

- the council’s stated aim to 'safeguard and improve the biodiversity of Barnet's parks and open spaces'
